“Crave” by Tracy Wolff

Beautiful. Bloody. Broken. Brilliant. Bewitching.

Those are just a few words to describe this book but I’m not sure if I’ll ever have enough. I took one look at the cover and I just knew I was going to love this book. And wow, it still blew my mind and exceeded all my expectations. I was so afraid of reading a book that was basically Twilight 2.0. Turns out, I had no reason to fear. This book is fiercely it’s own, dark and damaged and delightful all at once.

Meet Grace, the new girl at a school that’s not quite right. A girl who is now an orphan. She hasn’t even begun to heal from her wounds when she suddenly finds herself completely lost and out of place.

Enter Jaxon, a brooding vampire who is very emotionally scarred but also a sweetheart deep deep down. What exactly is it that draws him to Grace, and is he threatening her or saving her?

Enter Macy, Flint, Tia, etc. There are so many characters in this book and they all seem to be hiding something, but will Grace be alive long enough to figure it out?

I’ve never read Twilight. I wasn’t into the “hot sparkly vampire and werewolf boy fighting over Bella” thing. It seemed shallow and that was something I feared this book would repeat. But this book is far from shallow; it is deep and beautiful and wonderful. Did I cringe sometimes? Yeah, yeah I did. But did I laugh, smile, and worry for the characters in the book? Yes yes yes, I did all of those things so much. And I’m pretty sure I banged my head against a wall once or twice, trying not to scream in frustration over how long it was taking certain characters (pretty sure you know exactly who I’m talking about) to get together. And I mean that in the best way. The author sure knew what she was doing. I haven’t read a book this long for a while now and I tore straight through it and I’m considering doing it again. The suspense, the curiosity, the sheer fascination with this story were so worth the read. And the characters are so cute! And you definitely don’t want to miss the bonus chapters from Jaxon’s point of view at the end! (That’s probably what makes me want to reread it so bad actually!) Needless to say at this point, I’d highly recommend reading this book.

Just a warning though for anyone who does: there is a MASSIVE CLIFFHANGER at the end which is currently going to be the death of me. I’m 110% confident that this book was worth the cliffhanger, but just a heads up for anyone who doesn’t want to deal with that. I’m gladly going to suffer until the next one comes out because I need to see how my characters are doing! And because this author is amazing! And because my curiosity is so piqued right now! Bring on book #2!

“Shielded” by KayLynn Flanders

4/5 stars

I received this book as an ARC and I’m voluntarily leaving a review. Three words: short and sweet! I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book which somewhat caught me off guard. I had seen reviews of people saying that the pacing was too fast, but I would actually disagree. I think the pacing was just right for the book, even if we’re thrown into some chaotic stuff at the beginning of the book. Jenna goes through a lot and we experience it all at the same time as her. Also, the cover of the book is beautiful! Jenna is such a lovable character; she’s fiery, determined, and is actually super sweet. I often found myself going “Awww!!!” but I just as often was like “what? No!” The author caught me off guard so many times. Some parts were predictable, but other times I was surprised by a sudden change. The other characters were also lovable; I love the family dynamics in this book. By the end of this book, I found myself incredibly invested in making sure Jenna would survive. I was really satisfied with the ending of this book; it was sweet and I almost thought it was a stand alone novel. However, there are still some things that need to be taken care of so I’m happily going to get a copy of the sequel when it comes out. This book is clean and wholesome, great for YA readers but it also would be a good book for middle grade readers. This sweet, precious novel got me very attached to the characters and I can’t wait for another book.

“The Prince and the Poisoner” by Helena Rookwood

5/5 stars

I’m not sure where to even begin with this review. I’m voluntarily reviewing this book as I was given an ARC for it. I requested this ARC because of the beautiful cover and the fact it mentioned fae, a fantastically magical carnival, and the title hinted at a slight fairytale retelling aspect. I am ashamed to say I have not read any of Helena Rookwood’s other works, something I hope to remedy in the future! This book majorly surpassed my expectations. I wasn’t sure what to expect of this book, and it thoroughly blew me away. Rescued by a mysterious stranger, our protagonist finds herself making a very dangerous deal for her freedom. But that deal leads to other deals and lies and magic and so much more. A spectacular carnival is planned as well as a royal wedding between two very interesting members of royalty. What Lira, the protagonist, thought would be a somewhat simple deal turns into a massive world of confusion, magic, lies, deceit, and maybe even love. What was the true meaning of the deal she made, who really asked it of her, and why did she get roped into all of this? I’m personally not the hugest fan of Lira but I found myself rooting for her as she got caught in all manner of situations. I am very eager to read the next book and get some answers. This book reminded me a bit of Caraval, with a dash of the Iron Fey series as well. I hope many others pick up a copy of this book!

“All the Stars and Teeth” by Adalyn Grace

“A pirate, a princess, a stowaway, and a mermaid.” As princess, Amora wants nothing more than to rule her kingdom and take care of her people. However, in order to prove she’s worthy of being the queen, she has to pass a test in front of many of her people. This should be easy; she’s practiced for it her whole life. But not everything goes as planned. That same night, she is on the run after a pirate frees her and gets her on his ship. Unbeknownst to them, a stowaway is on board as well. To add to this strange crew, they pick up a mermaid along the way. The fate of the entire kingdom is up to them as well as all the lives of the people in it. Many secrets, dangers, and enemies block their path; and Amora is left wondering: did her father keep her locked away to keep her safe, or was it to prevent her from discovering the horrors of what has become of their kingdom?

I give a lot of books higher ratings but that’s mostly because I DNF whatever I don’t like without rating it. This book would get so many more stars if I had the option, but I am limited to 5. I procrastinated reading this book because I’ve been so tired of the “princess/fallen kingdom/has to restore the kingdom and save the people” theme that’s been popular lately. However, I regret thinking that this would just be another one of those. This book is completely different from my expectations of it. The lies and secrets and just the overwhelming darkness that plagues this kingdom is fascinating. The characters (particularly Bastian) are funny and interesting. The seasick Ferrick, the murderous but amazing Vataea, the charming quirky pirate Bastian (kind of reminds me of Hook from Once Upon a Time), and the determined and deadly Amora. I’m also just impressed by the sheer amount of detail the author put into this book, as well as her beautiful writing style. There was a lot of information that the reader needed as they read and she made sure to communicate it along with the plot instead of just throwing it at us. I was so frustrated when I finished the last page as I realized I had finished it and the sequel is not out yet. I’m going to be the first person in line to get that book! If you’re a fan of fantasy, beautiful writing, funny and witty characters with a touch of a dark side, and dark secrets, grab a copy of this book!

“What I Like About You” by Marisa Kanter

“The flowers are dead, I’m surrounded by orange, and a suitcase has been disemboweled in the search for a phone charger.”

I’m a firm believer that the first line of a book is incredibly important. This one caught my interest and before I knew it, I was face-to-face with a main character who might as well have been me, only she gets a more fun YA adventure than my actual life. I mean, a bookstagrammer, blogger, book reviewer girl who is incredibly bad at making friends and talking to people in real life? A girl who walks around in “The Book Was Better” t-shirts and has a Harry Potter obsession? It was like reading a book written about myself. Halle is a book nerd–she is an avid lover of books, particularly the YA genre. She also loves cupcakes and out of that, One True Pastry, a bookstagram account, was born. However, she goes by Kels on there because Kels can be what Halle isn’t–cool, fun, adored by people. Out of all her online friends, Nash is the one she is the closest too. They’ve been online friends for years, dreaming of the day they could meet. So when Halle accidentally ends up going to the same school as Nash, she has no idea what to do. She ISN’T Kels–or is she? Pretending that she is just simply Halle, she cleverly maneuvers through her real life relationships and her online ones. This book sounds pretty light, but this book has some dark themes. Death, grief, panic attacks, etc. I expected some angst, given that always seems to be the case when one is living a double life, but I wasn’t expecting this. As Halle grows closer to Nash, a horrible yet wonderful truth comes to light: Nash loves Kels. Who is Halle. But not Halle. At what point does Halle need to come clean? How far is too far? Halle has to tell him eventually, but will she lose him and all of her friends in the process? This book was absolutely fantastic, though I might be biased since the main character sounds so similar to myself. The author’s dedication to such small details is so impressive and makes the read even more entrancing. She writes out some of the reviews, emails, DMs, text messages, etc. and does it so so well! She created such a relatable character people can connect to and feel for throughout the book. Watching Halle go through so many ups and downs was hard because I could relate. I’m slightly jealous of Halle though, as the fact remains that she’s a very influential bookstagrammer and reviewer and managed to make friends IRL. Ultimately, this book was amazing and funny and sad and relatable and beautiful and fun! I loved reading it from start to finish. Any YA romance fans out there need to pick up a copy of this book when it hits the shelves!

“The Way of the Househusband,” Vol.1 Review

3/5 stars

This was a short, fun read! A former yakuza (basically means a really powerful gangster) has now left his notorious legacy behind and is now taking on a new daunting mission–the mission of being a househusband! With his wife being a dedicated businesswoman, he is left to take care of the chores like shopping, cleaning, cooking, etc. However, many gang members still recognize him as “the Immortal Dragon.” This leads to many funny misunderstandings, the majority of them ending up with the househusband coming out on top! Without spoiling anything, I will say that my favorite part was househusband vs. roomba (read the manga to know what scene I’m referring to!) While I did enjoy this funny, light-hearted manga, it did not strike me as something particularly spectacular, hence the 3-star rating. I’d still recommend reading it though as it is very short and amusing. Thank you for the ARC, NetGalley!

“The Phantom’s Curse” by Shelley Wilson

I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
3.5/5 stars

Let me start off by saying that this is probably not the kind of book I would normally choose to read. I think it was probably intended for a slightly younger audience than myself. However, despite the fact that this book is not a book I would normally read, I still enjoyed it. The author truly did a great job in delivering her story. A young girl, Maz, from the lower towns heads off into the city for the first time in order to celebrate turning sixteen. She is accompanied by her younger brother who she has cared for ever since her parents were taken from her. What she doesn’t expect is that she’ll leave the city alone. A bumpy road full of obstacles has opened up before her. At first she just intends to save herself and her brother, but it soon becomes apparent that everyone’s lives might be in Maz’s hands. Many allies join her in her quest to retrieve her brother and save her people. Many secrets come to light during this journey that will change everything Maz knows to be true.

My only problem with this book is that it seems to be more intended for middle-school to high-school age audiences which I unfortunately am not in. I was still able to enjoy it, but a younger reader would probably enjoy it much more than I could. However, this does not change the fact that the author did a great job with the plot, characters, and writing itself. All in all, this book is a short, fun adventure about the power of friendship and family in a world where darkness is trying to destroy everything.

“Spy x Family, Vol. 1” Review

I received an ARC of this manga from #NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

This was honestly one of the most enjoyable mangas I have ever read. I know it is only the first volume, but I am already so invested into this series. As I was reading, I was mostly laughing hysterically! The father, an extremely talented spy, is tasked to assemble a fake family in order to complete his newest mission. As he is completely accustomed to working alone and gave up any notion of ever having a family, this proves to be quite a challenge for him. Unknowingly, he manages to get a wife who is an assassin and a daughter who is a telepath. They all have their own reasons to agreeing to this arrangement, but it is extremely comical to watch them try to pass as a normal family. I also want to point out how much I enjoy the art in general. Every reaction, facial expression, etc. is done so wonderfully and just adds to the humor throughout the story. The face Anya makes when she overhears something sketchy is priceless! If you’re looking for a fun, light read, please read this manga!

“The Court of Miracles” by Kester Grant

I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I was first intrigued when this book was said to be similar to Six of Crows and Les Miserables as those are two of my favorite things. However, I had also been concerned that this would just be a poor remake of Les Miserables. When I saw that the names Epinone and Cosette had been shortened to Nina and Ettie, respectively, my concerns only grew. The first few chapters had started off kind of slow, and I found myself having a hard time getting into it.

Suddenly, that all changed. This book is wonderfully dark, terribly captivating, and full of adventure and thrills. Nina is such a hardcore person, and she is such a fighter. I loved watching her lash out and seeing her get the recognition she deserves. For as dark as this book was, I often found myself laughing at the characters and their conversations. The characters were very enjoyable and I fell in love with them just like I did with the actual characters in Les Miserables. The author did a great job of blending French into the book, as well as describing the settings in all of their gruesome and dark glory. I was never able to figure out how exactly this book was going to end; I enjoyed the thrill of the book up until the very end. I would completely recommend this book–please do not skip it because of your initial perception of it. It is definitely worth the read!
