Description:

Katharyn Blair crafts a fiercely feminist fantasy with a horrifying curse, swoon-worthy sea captains, and the power of one girl to choose her own fate in this contemporary standalone adventure that’s perfect for fans of The Fifth Wave and Seafire, and for anyone who has ever felt unchosen.

For Charlotte Holloway, the world ended twice.

The first was when her childhood crush, Dean, fell in love—with her older sister.

The second was when the Crimson, a curse spread through eye contact, turned the majority of humanity into flesh-eating monsters.

Neither end of the world changed Charlotte. She’s still in the shadows of her siblings. Her popular older sister, Harlow, now commands forces of survivors. And her talented younger sister, Vanessa, is the Chosen One—who, legend has it, can end the curse.

When their settlement is raided by those seeking the Chosen One, Charlotte makes a reckless decision to save Vanessa: she takes her place as prisoner.

The word spreads across the seven seas—the Chosen One has been found.

But when Dean’s life is threatened and a resistance looms on the horizon, the lie keeping Charlotte alive begins to unravel. She’ll have to break free, forge new bonds, and choose her own destiny if she has any hope of saving her sisters, her love, and maybe even the world.

Because sometimes the end is just a new beginning.

Author Bio:

I live in LA, drink way too much coffee, and write all day long — because I’m crazy blessed to do what I’ve been doing for fun since I was a kid hiding in my garage loft writing terrible, terrible vampire stories. Glitter enthusiast. Bethyl shipper. Pluviophile. Ask me about my Dean Winchester obsession. John 1:5.

I’m wife to Ross and mom to Aryn, Liam, and River Grace. Also, mom to Cricket (a dog, not an insect), Maximus Dogimus Meridius (a ferocious cuddlebug) Maggie Rhee (cat, not the bad a** from The Walking Dead), and Kovacs (no parenthetical needed for him).

Book Review:

4/5 stars

I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Charlotte is used to the end of the world. Growing up in the shadow of her older sister was hard enough, but Charlotte didn’t expect the man she loved to fall for Harlow. She didn’t expect the zombie apocalypse, either. Harlow is one of the commanders in their group of survivors and Vanessa, Charlotte’s younger sister, is the Chosen One who will save them all. But their camp is raided in search of the Chosen One and Charlotte gives herself up to save Vanessa. Things get complicated, lives are threatened, and Charlotte has no idea how much longer she can keep up the Chosen One act. After all, how can someone unchosen save the world?

Zombies? Pirates? An ancient curse? This book has so many things going for it! I didn’t even mention a very attractive pirate captain with a good heart. Interested yet? Despite all these things, there was one particular thing that drew me to this book–the idea that someone ordinary was capable of saving the world. Charlotte has no special powers. She’s not confident and clever like Harlow. She has no prophecy that claims she will save the world like Vanessa. She’s just an ordinary girl without powers who managed to stand up for those she loved time and time again. That’s what sold me on this book.

This isn’t your ordinary zombie apocalypse book. The virus is spread through eye contact, there are pirates who kidnap humans and sell them off for money, and this whole thing was started by an ancient pirate curse. I loved all these unique aspects! Charlotte was my favorite character, though several side characters are also amazing (I’m not going to use names because of spoilers!)

This book is a reminder that you don’t have to be “chosen” to do great things; sometimes a little bit of courage and love can go a long way.

Zombie fans, pirate fans, fantasy fans, romance fans, YA fans–this book has little something for all of you!

Content warning: language, some violence, a few sexual comments but nothing explicit
